One-hundred-one years ago today, the world's most famous painting -- da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" -- was stolen from the Louvre in Paris by museum employee Vincenzo Peruggia. The smirking lady was recovered two years later, but not all of the art world's masterworks have been so lucky.

Johannes Vermeer's “The Concert” was also stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum of Boston on March 18, 1990. The museum had acquired it at auction in 1892 for $5,000, but today it is worth millions.
